The retina contains information about the entire body and many diseases can be diagnosed simply by looking in the retina. There are too few retina specialists, ophthalmologists, and optometrists in the world to see the billions of patients who need to be seen, therefore, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is needed. AI is able to reach many more patients, and is as good as human experts at detecting several of the diseases that can be seen in the retina.
This is exactly why our company is named RETINA-AI Health; we use AI to look at the RETINA and understand the status of one's HEALTH. We have built a cloud-based AI platform that diagnoses diseases such as diabetic retinopathy from pictures of the retina; other ophthalmic diseases in this category include macular degeneration and glaucoma. Diseases that are not primarily ophthalmic can also be detected in the retina; for example, kidney disease, Alzheimer's disease, liver disease, anemia, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and the risk of developing heart disease.
